European Union Information Centre

How will the Turkey's EU membership process proceed? What are the different steps that are being taken towards harmonisation with the EU? What are the current applications for different issues? What are the EU's financial support programmes and how to benefit from them? Henceforth there is now a new place to go to get answers to these and similar questions: The European Union Information Centre.

The European Union Information Centre, in short EUIC, officially started its operations on 16 January 2004 at Park Apartmanı No: 30-32 Mete Caddesi, Taksim. The EUIC came into service as part of the European Commission's Communication Strategy for Turkey project, supported by the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey in relation to the enlargement process. The doors of the Information Centre will be open to everybody from all walks of life that are in need of accurate information on EU related issues.

The main services provided by the Centre are as follows:

Answering EU related questions
EU experts will staff the EUIC. These experts will answer the personal inquiries of visitors to the centre, as well as e-mail, fax and telephone inquiries on subjects such as the EU's financial aid programs, Turkey's participation in the Community's Programmes, enlargement, EU policies and educational opportunities. The EUIC will also host EU related meetings, seminars and cultural activities.

Internet Access
Visitors to the Centre will have access for research purposes to 10 computers linked to the EU's and the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey's databases. Furthermore, these computers will enable users to reach information about the latest developments concerning the EU and EU-Turkey relations, notices of events that are part of the EU Communication project and their weekly e-bulletin 'Current News'.

Documentation
Several publications on the EU, its policies, and EU-Turkey relations will also be available at the Information Centre. In addition to being able to take advantage of resource books and periodicals at the Centre, visitors will also be able to obtain free copies of brochures published by the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey and its bi-monthly magazine 'Current News'.

Meetings
The Centre will also host events such as meetings attended by high-level EU representatives, seminars, and press conferences. The EUIC will also organise seminars jointly with local governments, NGOs, academics and media representatives.

School Tours
Tours organised at the Centre for pupils of elementary and high schools, and university students will provide young people with information on subjects such as the historical development of the EU, the founding principles of the EU, its values, and EU-Turkey relations.
